Mustard oil helps to heal the internal injury. Apply warm mustard oil on the sprain and gently massage with your finger tips. Warm olive oil, pain relieving herbal oil and castor oil have healing properties and help to heal sprain quickly.
Kerosene oil prevents swelling and it relieves pain when applied immediately after a sprain. You may use pain relieving ointments that are available at medical stores to heal sprain quickly.


Ice is a natural anti-inflammatory. The extreme cold constricts the blood vessels, increasing the blood pressure in the affected area and thus reducing the swelling in the process. Ideally an ice-pack should be applied on the affected foot for about 20 minutes every couple of hours for 48 to 72 hours after the sprain. Some may not be able to bear the extreme cold for 20 minutes straight. They should apply it for at least 10 minutes at a stretch, but they need to apply it every hour. If you do not have an ice pack, you can use a bag of frozen vegetables or you can wrap a few ice cubes in a washcloth and use that. Hot or cold fomentation works wonders to heal a sprain. For cold fomentation, make an ice compress by tying 6-8 ice cubes in a towel and place it on the sprained area for 5-10 minutes. It helps to stop an internal bleeding in case you have a torn muscle and relieves pain by numbing the area. For hot fomentation, half fill a bucket with hot water, add Epsom salt and soak the affected part in it for 10-15 minutes. Afterwards, massage the area with any of the oils mentioned above and wrap the area with a bandage.


Applying poultice on sprains and injuries is an age old practice. Poultice helps to heal the sprain quickly; it removes swelling and relieves pain. It also cures bruises that occur due to internal bleeding.


As often as you can, raise your sprained ankle above your heart. This will reduce the swelling tremendously. However, you should know that putting your ankle on a chair while you are seated does not count.
