Uterus is the main reproductive organ involved in carrying the baby to term. Any problem or anomaly that affects the uterus will adversely affect the woman’s ability to carry a pregnancy to full term. A retroverted uterus is a problem faced by many women that tampers with their ability to conceive and carry the baby until delivery.
Under normal circumstances, a woman will have a uterus that is placed vertically and this is the ideal position for a healthy pregnancyA retroverted uterus will be tilted backwards against the pelvic wall, making it difficult to conceive and leading to complications during pregnancy.
The problem can arise due to conditions like endometriosis and would require surgical assistance in some women. However women with a retroverted uterus too can achieve pregnancy with a bit of care and following the right procedure.
Ways To Getting Pregnant With A Retroverted Uterus
Elevation of Hips
While a normal uterus will take the sperms even if the woman lies down flat after intercourse, a retroverted uterus will require extra help in positioning after the intercourse is complete. The tilt of the uterus makes it difficult for the sperm to enter the fallopian tube
After intercourse, women with retroverted uteruses must therefore elevate their hips in the air by positioning a pillow under the back for at least half an hour so that the sperms can slide through easily without any obstruction. The elevation of the hips will also help the uterus to slide forward to a vertical position temporarily, therebymaking pregnancya possibility.
Endometriosis is one of the major causes for developing a retroverted uterus. The tissues that grow inside the uterine wall as a result of endometriosis can push the uterus backwards causing pain as well as bleeding.
Surgical removal of the tissue is done through a laparoscopic procedure and the tissues are burned using laser beams. This will increase the chances of egg implantation.
This is another surgical procedure that is used for repositioning the uterus. An incision is made on the abdominal wall and the uterus is pulled forward so that it remains tilted forward than backwards.
This is a simple surgery and hence there is minimal pain and complications. There is no need for bed rest after the surgery and the patient recovers within a week after the procedure. Uterine suspension too improves the chances of a pregnancy.
Uplift surgery is surgical procedure which is somewhat similar to a uterine suspension. However, this is done as a laparoscopic procedure and hence the pain and the scarring will be minimal.
The wall of the uterus in this procedure is not breached and hence the patient recovers almost immediately without any need to hospital stay. The procedure is very simple and is done as an outpatient procedure.
Once the problem of the retroverted uterus is rectified, most women conceive naturally without any artificial methods of attaining fertility. It is only when women fail to conceive even after surgical assistance that other artificial methods of injecting the embryo into the uterus will have to be tried.
