Herbal Remedies for Leg Cramps

Herbal Tea

Different herbs can be mixed together to prepare herbal tea. An individual can boil silverweed, balm leaves and chamomile flowers in water and consume this herbal tea 2 to 3 times on a daily basis for effective results. Honey can also be added to the herbal tea to improve the taste. Regular use of this remedy can help in reducing the pain resulting from leg cramps.


Leg cramps can be treated with the use of chamomile herb. Chamomile contains glycine. This compound helps in relaxing muscle cramps. An individual can massage his/her legs with chamomile oil to obtain relief from the problem of leg cramps. Consumption of tea containing chamomile oil can also provide the desired results. For best results, chamomile tea should be consumed 6 to 7 times in a day.


Consumption of yarrow tea multiple times on a daily basis can also help in the treatment of leg cramps. Yarrow tea can be prepared by boiling yarrow (1 teaspoon) in a cup of water for 10 to 15 minutes. Application of yarrow tea (with the use of a towel) on the legs can also provide the desired results. It is interesting to note that intake of yarrow juice (1 tablespoon) on a daily basis can protect an individual from all kinds of muscle cramps and spasms.

Wild Yam

A mixture of wild yam (8 to 10 drops) and water can be directly rubbed on the affected area to obtain relief from the symptoms of leg cramps. Another option is to consume tea prepared by boiling dried wild yam root in a cup of water. Application of creams containing wild yam can also provide quick relief from leg cramps.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is extracted from the plant’s flowers and can be used as an herbal remedy for leg cramps. An individual can rub a mixture of lavender and olive oil on the legs for obtaining relief from the pain resulting from leg cramps. To obtain effective results, it is important to remove the mixture after 10 to 15 minutes.

Rosemary Oil

Another herb for leg cramps is rosemary. An individual suffering from leg cramps can take a bath with water containing rosemary oil. Another option is to massage the legs with this oil. A combination of rosemary, arnica and eucalyptus oil can also be used for best results.


Cayenne helps in improving the blood circulation and relieving the pain resulting from leg cramps. Cayenne can be used as an ointment or consumed as a tincture to treat the symptoms associated with leg cramps.
