It can be triggered by many substances or situations and usually starts as an itchy patch of skin that turns into swollen red weltsHives are also known as urticaria. They are reddish lumps that occur on the surface of the skin. These lumps cause the entire area to become swollen and inflamed. Hives are normally extremely itchy.Hives are very common, and most often their cause is elusive.
They take about a week to vanish completely. However, in some cases, hives move and affect different parts of the body successively. This can be very agonising for the patient. Hives are normally triggered by an allergic reaction although there are several other causes for this condition.
Exposure to Allergens
People all around the world are allergic to different things. Common allergens include dust, pollen and pet fur. When a person comes in contact with such allergens, a reaction occurs in the body. This reaction often causes hives to break out on the surface of the skin. These hives gradually subside after some time.
Many people around the world are allergic to certain food items. Common foods that trigger an allergy include shellfish, peanuts, milk and certain berries. When consumed, these foods are capable of causing an allergy within a short span of five minutes. In some cases, the allergic reaction takes place only after a few hours. Some people experience mild symptoms whereas others experience symptoms that can even result in death.
One of the common symptoms of a food allergy can be the eruption of hives. Hives are not restricted to any particular part of the human body. They can occur and move steadily to other parts of the body as well. As soon as the person discovers the reason for their food allergy, that food item must be avoided so as to prevent another break out of hives.
Certain medicines can also trigger allergic reactions in some individuals. If people consume such medication, their skin breaks out into hives which are very painful. In some cases, the consumption of such medicines can even result in the death of the person. Penicillin is one such medicine that often triggers an allergic reaction in human beings.
There are several other factors in nature which can cause a break out of hives. In some people, hives appear when they are exposed to extreme climatic conditions. In others, prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the appearance of hives. In certain rare cases, a person can even suffer from hives due to excessive perspiration that takes place during rigorous exercise routines. Such cases of hives are usually not severe. They gradually disappear within a few hours.
