The breasts develop due to an increase in estrogen during puberty. During the menstrual cycle, various hormones cause changes in breast tissue that can lead to pain or discomfort in some women. While breasts do not typically hurt, occasional breast pain.

There are several different types of breast lumps, and while most of them are benign and merely a result of monthly hormone fluctuations, they should always be checked by a medical practitioner to ensure they are not serious.

While PMSing

It is one of the most common causes of breast pain. It occurs due to changes in the estrogen levels of the body. This change in hormonal level causes tender swellings in the breasts. It usually starts before the day of commencement of your periods and continues till the first day. This comes under the cyclical mastalgia.

During Pregnancy

Breasts can be painful during pregnancy as well, due to the same reason as that of PMS, i.e. hormonal changes. It starts approximately from the 4th to 7th week of pregnancy and can last through the first trimester.


Many women have the complaint of breast pain just before the menopause stage. This is attributed to the huge hormonal changes that take place during this phase.

Post A Workout Session

When you are indulged in heavy weight lifting or pushups, you can experience breast pain, which actually is not pain in the breasts, not in the underneath muscles. These are the pectoral muscles.

This disease is characterized by painful lumps and swellings in the breast. They are benign in nature and are not a serious concern. But they are troublesome in the sense that they are tender and cause pain. According to a study, approximately 60% of women suffer from this disorder at some point of time in their lives.


Tea, coffee, soda, and chocolate are common dietary additions that are known to be possible and increased tenderness. This is because these normally contain caffeine, which causes a dilation of blood vessels and leads to tenderness. Eliminating all forms of caffeine at once can be difficult, but a gradual decrease in daily consumption should be possible. There are plenty of non-caffeinated drinks that are good substitutes, like decaf coffee or sparkling water.


This is the infection of the ducts of mammary gland, which results in swelling and inflammation of breasts. It is seen exclusively in women who are breastfeeding. If untreated, it may result in breast abscess.
