Mouth ulcers are commonly found in adults and kids alike. It is a white and grayish pit with red halos and appears shallow causing soreness and burning pain. Mouth ulcers are also called as Canker Sores. These ulcers usually appear on the tongue, lips, inside the cheeks, even inside the bottom lip and on the gums. When the ulcer is about to occur you feel burning and tingling sensation in the mouth. They are not ulcer contagious but always tend to recur. These ulcers may occur one at a time or in clusters. Mouth ulcers generally last for about one week or ten days.

Baking soda

Baking soda is an alkaline and will neutralize acids that irritate the canker sore; it also helps kill bacteria to help your sore heal quickly. For a cure, try this home remedy: Rinse your mouth with a solution of 1 teaspoon baking soda in 1/2 cup of warm water.


The live culture in yoghurt will destroy the bacteria that are present in the oral cavity and put an end to your trouble. Take yoghurt with live cultures and leave it in your mouth for a few minutes every 2 hours. This will prevent the bacteria from increasing and slowly the ulcers start drying up and finally will be completely removed.

 Sage leaves

Sage leaves can be boiled along with water for 10 minutes. Use this water after cooling to swish and gargle your mouth. Being anti inflammatory and antibacterial in nature, they too are good fortreating mouth ulcers in a day or two. Continue swishing your mouth all throughout the day, allowing the water to remain in the mouth for 5 minutes. Spit it off after that.

 Holy Basil

Another powerful natural antibacterial agent, all you need to do is to chew some holy basil leaves in your mouth and allow the juice to stay in the mouth for some time for facilitating the destruction of bacteria.Alternately, keep some lightly crushed holy basil leaves inside your mouth all throughout the day, replacing with fresh ones when they run out of juice. This will take care of your mouth sores in a day.


For this purpose, you may mash ripe bananas and mix it with curd with live cultures. Bananas sooth the skin and curd will act on the bacteria. Take 3-4 times a day. The next day your ulcers will be gone and you are free to eat and talk heartily.


Salt water swish is the simplest of remedies and a great way to bust the bacterial action and heal the sores instantly. Take one teaspoon salt and add to a glass of warm water. Swish your mouth 5-6 times a day. Mix some salt with water and apply on the sores after swishing. It could sting, but the next day you will be completely alright.


Honey works due to its antibacterial properties. Honey retains moisture and prevents your mouth from becoming dry.  It also hastens the process of new tissue growth. Dr. Gautam suggests that you apply raw homey to the ulcer or you can even mix it with someamla powder and gently rub on the affected area.  You can even mix pinch of turmericwith honey, it helps in healing.
