It’s quite common to have more vaginal discharge during pregnancy.It is usually not something to worry about as it occurs due to the surge in hormones. The discharge is usually white, clear and thick. As long as it is not yellow and foul smelling, it is not something to worry about.
Discharge increases during the 1st month of pregnancy and continues well into the second trimester. The discharge is also a way of protecting the cervix and the uterus from an infection. Most of the time the excessive discharge can be uncomfortable and messy. Here, we look at some common “leaks” for which you might need your throwaway undies or a panty liner. To Deal With Discharge During Early Pregnancy
Practice Good Hygiene
Wash your pubic area with warm water especially if you suffer from too much of discharge. While the discharge itself is not harmless, it could cause and infection especially if you do not follow good hygiene.
Change Panties Frequently
Wear well fitting cotton panties and change them frequently to prevent leakages and embarrassing stains.
Do not wear very tight underwear as this can leave you feeling uncomfortable.
Switch To Panty Liners
While pads are too bulky and cumbersome for dealing with vaginal discharge, panty liners often come to the rescue. These can be brought from a chemist shop. They are thin liners which easily absorb the excess discharge without making you run to the toilet or rushing to change your underwear. They also trap foul odour.

If your discharge is excessive and is accompanied by a foul odour and itching, do not ignore it. See a doctor right away.
It may be a case of bacterial vaginosis which needs to be treated urgently and promptly otherwise it could prove to harmful for the developing foetus.
Drink A Lot Of Water
Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids. This keeps the vagina and cervix healthy and the probability of the discharge becoming infectious is greatly reduced.
Avoid A Bubble Bath
If the discharge is heavy, avoid taking bubble baths. This may alter the pH balance of your vagina and cause your vagina to get irritated and produce more discharge. Take a normal bath with mild soap and water.
Do Away With The Wipes
The vaginal wipes often come with scent and harmful chemicals which may disturb the pH value of the vagina. You need not use them. Just ensure that you keep your vagina clean and dry by following basic hygiene practices.Most of the time vaginal discharge becomes ok on its own and eases out by the end of the first trimester.
This is the time when the hormones are no longer surging and become stable as the pregnancy progresses. In the meantime keep your doctor updated for unusual signs of discharge and the likelihood of an infection if it occurs. An infection needs to be dealt with right away.
