Swimmer’s ear is a condition where the external ear and the ear canal gets inflamed. This condition is also called as otitis externa. The condition occurs when swimmers spend a lot of time in water. The external ear and ear canal get drenched in the water for extended periods.

This results in saggy and wrinkled skin on the external ear. Although this is not harmful, a break in the skin can cause potentially harmful bacteria and virus to enter the ear causing redness, pain and swelling. Swimmer’s ear unless severe and painful can be easily treated at home with the help of these simple .

Best Home Remedies For Swimmer’s Ear

Warm Compresses

Apply a heating pad or a warm compress on the outer ear to get relief from acute pain and inflammation. Hot water fomentation is also useful. In this, a towel is dipped into warm water and gently patted on the ear.

Garlic

Garlic is a useful treatment for swimmer’s ear. A few garlic oil drops can be put into the ear. This helps to arrest the infection from spreading.

Alcohol

As a precautionary measure, all swimmers should rub and clean their ears with swabs of alcohol to prevent the onset of an infection. The alcohol helps to evaporate all moisture present inside the ear and keeps the ear canal dry.

Vinegar

Vinegar acts as a potent antifungal agent. Just put a few drops of vinegar into both your ears and drain them out after 5-10 minutes.
Repeat this 2-3 times a day for 5 days to see best results. The acetic acid resent in vinegar prevents the multiplication of fungi and bacteria.

Baby Oil

Baby oil has soothing properties. Put a few drops of baby oil into both ears and cover the ears with a cotton ball to prevent the oil from leaking. The baby oil keeps the skin soft and supple and gives relief from itching.

Mix equal parts of hydrogen peroxide, water and vinegar. Administer eardrops with this solution with the help of an ear dropper. Let it stay for a minute and drain it out. Repeat this procedure on the other ear as well.

Avoid Swimming

If you have developed a severe ear infection, it is better to avoid swimming for some time until the infection subsides. Try to swim only on the surface and use earplugs while swimming.

This prevents the water from seeping into your ear. Earplugs made of silicone or wax are the most effective. This is also the best preventive measure.

Saline Solution

A saline solution comprising of water and salt effectively cleanses out the ear. Add a few saline drops into your ear and clean out your ears with the help of this solution.

Hot Water Bottle

You can try sleeping at night with your ear placed on a hot water bottle to get the much-needed relief.

Salt

Fill up a sock with salt and microwave this in the oven for 2-3 minutes. Now sleep over this sock at night to help drain out the fluid. If the infection persists or gets severe, consult a doctor who will prescribe the necessary medication.
